A lawyer in a tan T-shirt stocking cans and bread into bins behind a handwritten free food sign at a food shelf

Britta Tollefson

Founding partner

Forms new nonprofits and keeps established ones in good standing.

Britta started the firm to be the lawyer she wanted to call as a volunteer: one who answers in plain words and asks who will be standing at the table on Saturday morning.

She forms nonprofit corporations, prepares exemption applications and advises boards on how to keep what they build in good order. Most weeks she also spends a shift stocking shelves at a neighborhood food shelf.

Working with Britta

  • Starts every new organization with a plain-language checklist for the person who will run it day to day.
  • Writes bylaws a volunteer board can follow, not ones that sit in a drawer.
